On December 11, 2023, the final publication of the Interreg Italy-Switzerland 2014-2020 Program took place. This document vividly portrays the Program’s journey from 2014 to 2020 through graphical representations and succinctly outlines the R&D projects funded, among them, the MMM project (recently evolved into ROG with the platform’s latest developments).

The Medical Mockup Modelling (MMM) project, initiated under the Interreg V-A Italy-Switzerland 2014-2020 Program and funded within Axis 1 – Business Competitiveness, stands as a pinnacle of cross-border collaboration. Its impact extends significantly within the Med-Tech domain and presents noteworthy implications in the educational sphere.

Techinnova led the successful development of MMM in partnership with esteemed Italian and Swiss entities active in medical innovation.

Alongside Techinnova as the Italian lead, the project embraced collaboration with CNR – Institute of Clinical Physiology, MTM S.r.l., and HFI – Human Factor & Innovation in Italy. Similarly, the Swiss lead, University of Italian Switzerland – USI, collaborated with Algo4U Sagl and CE Advice Sagl.

MMM’s focus encompassed three key developmental domains:

  1. Algorithms and Software transforming 2D diagnostic images into 3D models: The team introduced pioneering solutions facilitating the conversion of two-dimensional images, such as CT scans, into medically relevant three-dimensional models.
  2. 3D Printing of lifelike organ mockups: Leveraging cutting-edge 3D printing techniques and meticulously developed resins and polymers, the project successfully produced highly detailed and functional medical prototypes.
  3. VR Visualization Platform for 3D models: The team developed a highly interactive platform offering end-users an intuitive interface to interact with and visualize three-dimensional medical models.

The chosen partners, boasting diverse yet complementary expertise and know-how, exemplify transnational excellence. Their collaborative effort was integral in steering the project towards success, employing a synergistic approach.

The close collaboration between Techinnova and the diverse partners involved in the MMM project reinforces the profound significance of transnational cooperation in scientific research and innovation across industries.
